XV – Thanks For The Donuts (J Dilla x Nujabes Tribute) (Compilation)

Posted on by Jagz Posted in Compilations | Leave a comment

X to the V has made a compilation of a few J Dilla tracks he has spat over in the past few years along with a bonus track from one of my favourite producers, Nujabes (whose birthday is also on February 7th and he passed away last year on February 26th). Read more below and hit the jump for the tracklist and download.

I’ve been a fan of the producer James Yancey aka J Dilla, since I first purchased “Like Water For Chocolate” by Common. I had became “XV” the same year and I remember reading the credits and seeing that “Jay Dee” had produced almost ALL of the album. Back then, I used to download music out of chatrooms on AOL (LOL!) and I remember doing a search in on a mIRC server for Jay Dee and came across all of his earlier work with Slum Village as well as an instrumental version of “Like Water For Chocolate”. I studied the way he chopped samples (although I never could learn how he did what he did, especially because of me using Fruity Loops) and was amazed by his compression techniques. From that day on, I was a believer!

“Donuts” was my first instrumental CD I copped from Dilla (I grabbed the earlier tapes later), and I started using them right away on my mixtapes. With those being earlier on in my career, I compiled a small collection of a few Dilla tracks I’ve done over the years, as well as a bonus with the producer, Nujabes (who shares Dilla’s birthday as well) in there.

So, here’s a quick little tribute mixtape I call…

Contraband & Maiya Present: Raekwon & Ghostface Killah – Blue & Cream (Compilation)

Posted on by Jagz Posted in Compilations | Leave a comment

A couple months back “I had crazy visions” of an idea for my next compilation, I wanted to make an ode to one of my favorite rap artists Ghostface Killah. Ghostface has long been a favorite rapper of mine and although he’s critically acclaimed he’s more-so considered a cult favorite than anything else. While thinking up ideas about how to formulate a great Ghostface compilation I decided that not only should I include Ghost but that it was necessity for Raekwon to be thrown into the mix due to the symbiotic relationship between the two on wax throughout most of their careers. Upon deciding that I was going to highlight the collaborative effort between the two artists I figured what a better way than to collaborate with someone I know has vast knowledge in the realm of the Wu-Tang as well. So I went into my unorthodox bag of tricks and linked up Maiya from Blindiforthekids.com who not only is a dedicated Wu and Ghost fan but also she is an excellent contributor when it comes to compilations. Over the past year or so I have grown fond of her Rendezvous compilations as well as her and No’s Grimey comps. We each had an equal hand in the finished product as far as the selection of songs is concerned and I feel that although this compilation spans 2 decades it still has a pretty cohesive feel to it. There is no doubt that most of Ghost best tracks feature Raekwon in some way, shape or form and vice versa. In fact some of Ghost’s stand out verses and one of his most timeless interludes can be found on Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… This compilation spans the careers of both Ghost and Rae including Wu-Tang crew joints all the way to GFK’s latest release Apollo Kids, we even have a couple random features thrown in there as well for you to enjoy. Hopefully this is the first of many collaborations between myself and Maiya seeing as though the process for this may have been a little long, I truly did enjoy it, hopefully you will too!

J Dilla’s Donuts As Performed By Stray Phrases (Mixtape/Compilation)

Posted on by Jagz Posted in Compilations, Mixtapes | Leave a comment

I’m downloading this now and going to give it a listen, I suggest you do too. I actually don’t know what to list this under so I put it under both mixtape and compilation. Spotted @ KN.

The crowd at The Local 269, a shabby New York City bar on 269 Houston Street, could not have been less interested. The bartender scribbled on his notebook, two older men talked to a woman half their age, and a gaggle of NYU students crowded a booth by the stage. Midterms were distant enough that they could drink on a Sunday. When an ear-splitting free jazz session finally died down, three NYU students put down their drinks took the stage.

“I thought Dilla was just a rapper,” asked a friend of mine who was there by mere coincidence. I began to reply, but the opening riff from “Workinonit” drowned out my voice. Maybe it’s a good thing more hip-hop kids weren’t in the house — one of them would have replied to that statement with the business end of a broken bottle.

The Detroit hip-hop producer passed away on February 10, 2006, but his influence is inescapable in 2010. The fanatical zeal of the Dilla fanbase has resulted in an outpouring of tributes, but few like this.

Stray Phrases is a jazz trio consisting of Storm Siegel on drums, Dave Mainella on piano, and Evan Crane on bass. On Sunday October 17, 2010, they covered J Dilla’s classic instrumental album Donuts from beginning to end. Metal Lungies is proud to bring you a recording of the whole set.
